The Healthy Business Opportunity identifies factors crucial to a healthy, growing business. By developing these important elements in a simple concept, we can build balance in promoting the highest principles of free enterprise. One of the most important elements is the effective and efficient "Management of Resources." Though this part of business is often overlooked or disdained, the management of resources has a dramatic impact on the profits of a business. Because of this impact on profits, it also plays an important role in the fulfillment of the overall mission of a business.
A resource is something that we draw upon to invest in the future success of our business. Resources are also referred to as assets in business terminology. The two resources most often referred to by business educators are current assets and fixed assets. Current assets are made up of cash, inventory, and other resources that can be turned into cash quickly. Fixed assets are usually equipment, real estate, and resources that are not easily turned into cash. Both current and fixed assets are easily measured and usually appear in the financial reports of a business.
The third major resource of a business is very difficult to measure in financial terms, but equally important to long term success. It is the human resource which is invested in a business. Human resource is made up of time and energy. Time relates to both the quantity and quality of time invested in a business venture and energy identifies the intensity of the investment. In other words, time is measured by how many hours are invested and by the strategic or "SMART" use of that time. Energy is the degree of motivation and intensity that is invested. We have all experienced these variables at one time or another at a restaurant. We have seen employees of the restaurant who were there, putting in their time, but that was all they were doing. Then we have experienced those who were both putting in their time and engaging in revenue producing activities (waiting on us), but with no real enthusiasm or focus. Finally, we have experienced those occasions when someone waited on our table who was not only putting in their time and doing what was expected of them; they were doing it with an enthusiasm and focus that caught our attention and increased the size of their gratuity.
Being proactive means taking full responsibility for our lives. We cannot control our environment, many of the events of our lives, or the actions of others. But we can choose how we respond to our environment, the events, and others. Being proactive is living our lives according to the values we believe in instead of the circumstances we face.
Putting first things first is the process of "organizing and executing around priorities."
By getting a clear picture in our minds of what results we want to achieve we create an inner focus that brings wisdom and inspiration to our actions. Beginning with the end in mind is the process of identifying the specific roles and goals that are meaningful in our lives.

When we learn to approach relationships with a desire for mutual benefits and mutual responsibility, we unlock a wellspring of creativity that results in benefits far beyond those of self interested pursuits.
By seeking to understand the feelings and experiences of others, we gain their trust and cooperation. This results in them taking a greater interest in our viewpoints and gives us a much better chance of creating a mutual beneficial partnership.
The essence of synergy is to value differences - to respect them, to build on strengths, to compensate for weaknesses.
Sharpening the saw is taking the time to renew the most valuable resource you have - you! It involves preserving and enhancing the four dimensions of your nature - physical, spiritual, mental, and social or emotional.
